Bezos Says Washington Post Will Not Endorse for President Because "The Stakes Are Too High"
Listen tothis article
The Washington Post won’t endorse a presidential candidate for the first time in decades. The current owner of The Post, Jeff Bezos, published an op-ed titled “The Hard Truth: Americans Don’t Trust the News Media,” in which he cited a Gallup poll that shows a record-low faith in the mainstream media – even lower than the public’s trust in Congress. Further, endorsing a presidential candidate “create[s] a perception of bias” by those who are allegedly unbiased.
Our profession is now the least trusted of all. Something we are doing is clearly not working. . . .
While I do not and will not push my personal interest, I will also not allow this paper to stay on autopilot and fade into irrelevance — overtaken by unresearched podcasts and social media barbs — not without a fight. It’s too important. The stakes are too high. Now more than ever the world needs a credible, trusted, independent voice, and where better for that voice to originate than the capital city of the most important country in the world? To win this fight, we will have to exercise new muscles.
You don’t have to watch the news very long to see why most Americans have less faith in the media than politicians. Instead of focusing solely on facts and the truth, the media’s propaganda blatantly drives the coverage. For example, how much of the mainstream media has been grotesquely comparing Trump to Hitler as of late?
The lack of a presidential endorsement by a major newspaper is so unique that it’s shocking. Bezos and other billionaires have been purchasing news outlets to expand their influence. Yet Bezos has recognized that most Americans’ trust in their influence is waning dramatically because of their perceived bias.
No wonder “the stakes are too high” for Bezos’ newspaper to throw their support behind a candidate. He can’t afford to lose more credibility and subscribers.
Former U.S. Representative Tulsi Gabbard elaborated further on Bezos’ decision:
Other legacy media organizations should kind of take a page out of [Bezos’] book and recognize what he pointed out, which is the American people trust the mainstream media less than Congress – and Congress is always at the bottom of that list. And so they should really look in the mirror and ask themselves, Why is that? Why is it that the American people trust Joe Rogan way more than they trust any of these mainstream propaganda media sources? . . .
One of the problems that we see from the MSNBCs of the world and the network TV broadcasts and The New York Times and others is they think the American people are stupid, and they really believe that people who are supporting Donald Trump are either stupid or, in the words of Hillary Clinton and others, that they are “deplorables” or fascists or Nazis. . . . It just shows . . . how out of touch with reality they are.
We told you yesterday about our newest amicus brief at the U.S. Supreme Court to defend election integrity. The state of Virginia has appealed to the high Court after a federal judge ordered that it restore noncitizens to its voting rolls.
The ACLJ filed its brief today in support of Virginia so the Justices could hear our arguments. This case, which the Supreme Court will now decide whether to consider, just days before Election Day, could have huge bearings on how states across the country are able to prevent illegal immigrants from actively interfering in our election.
You can join us at the U.S. Supreme Court. Visit our election integrity action page to sign our petition and get involved. Also, download our limited-time ACLJ Election Prayer Guide and pray for our nation during this time.
Finally, we can’t fight to keep the far Left from interfering in our elections without you. Donations made during this time are doubled to fund our fight to preserve election integrity – give today.
Today’s Sekulow broadcast included a full analysis of Bezos’ scrapping The Post’s endorsement of a political candidate for the first time in decades. Senator Bill Hagerty joined us in the studio to discuss the far Left’s disgusting rhetoric comparing conservatives to Nazis. ACLJ Senior Counsel for International and Government Affairs Jeff Ballabon talked about the mainstream media’s clear bias against conservatives.
