The Taxpayer Abortion Mill
As the United States faces historic budgetary problems, there is one industry that is not only thriving, but continues to be bolstered by hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. Shockingly, that favored industry is none other than the abortion industry, and as always, the primary beneficiary of those taxpayer dollars is none other than Planned Parenthood.
In what has become a tragic annual occurrence, yesterday we were all again reminded of the gigantic and ever-growing abortion business that is Planned Parenthood. This reminder came in the form of Planned Parenthood’s 2011-2012 Annual Report, in which the largest abortion provider in the world admitted to taking more than half a billion dollars in taxpayer funding and performing nearly 334,000 abortions during a timeframe in which prenatal services and adoption referrals were essentially non-existent.
While there is abundant room for editorializing about Planned Parenthood’s reckless pursuit of profit via elective abortions – including a disregard for parental notification laws, a willingness to engage in sex-selective abortions and accounting tactics under scrutiny, the figures themselves (as reported by Planned Parenthood itself) are sobering to the point of grief:
- Planned Parenthood ended 333,964 lives through abortion in 2010-2011, up from 329,445 in 2009-2010.
- U.S. taxpayers were forced to fund $542.4 million of Planned Parenthood’s $1.199 billion budget.
It is indescribably tragic to have lost so many lives at the hands of one entity. It is altogether breathtaking that you and I are being forced to fund that same entity every day.
Unfortunately, the grisly facts in this report do not end there. During the same time period, Planned Parenthood reports just 2,300 referrals for adoption and only 28,674 “prenatal services.” We know from previous analysis that this translates to only about 4,800 prenatal clients served. This occurs as Planned Parenthood reports multiple “services” being provided to every client through its doors while funneling as many of them as possible into its lucrative abortion mill.
While we are incredibly grateful for the precious lives who are ultimately brought to term (including those placed with adoptive parents), they are sadly an accidental footnote in Planned Parenthood’s abortion-based business model. There is no similar way in which to dress up the figure of 333,964 abortions. 333,964 abortions means 333,964 lives.
It is unconscionable that we as a society look at these tragic figures year after year and do nothing. We must wake up and demand an end to the taxpayer-funded abortion monstrosity that is Planned Parenthood.
The ACLJ is committed to defunding the abortion giant of our tax dollars at both the federal and state level. Add your name to our petition to defund Planned Parenthood today.
