Major Vote Ends in Chaos on House Floor
Listen tothis article
After his shameful outburst during President Trump’s joint address to Congress, U.S. Representative Al Green (TX-9) was censured by the House. After 10 moderate Democrats sided with the House Republicans, several far-Left Members disrupted the proceedings by singing “We Shall Overcome.”
So instead of just accepting the consequence of Rep. Green’s censure – which is barely anything, I might add – the far Left created chaos and put on a show. Of course, we shouldn’t be surprised based on how both far-Left Senators and Representatives behaved throughout Trump’s speech.
The House historically has three forms of punishments to exercise on Members of Congress for bad behavior. It can do a formal reprimand, the weakest type of discipline. It can vote for expulsion, which happened to Rep. George Santos (NY-3) in 2023. Finally, it can issue a censure, which is a resolution that shames an individual Member of Congress, and is read by the Speaker of the House as the guilty party stands in the well of the House chamber.
So the House voted 224-198 to censure Rep. Green, and as House Speaker Mike Johnson began reading the censure into the record, the far Left disruptively broke out in song. And now it’s the number one story in the country, as opposed to Green’s censure.
I usually view politics from a media perspective. Perhaps the Republicans in Congress should have moved past this issue without addressing it formally. Even though a censure is standard practice, it might have backfired. They can’t afford to give the far Left any opportunities to spin the narrative in their favor.
However, my colleague, Sekulow Executive Producer Will Haynes, didn’t buy that today’s chaos helped the Left. He believes the House had to censure Green to send the message that no further outbursts would be acceptable in future addresses to Congress. And he even argued for a censure vote for those who disrupted today’s proceedings. I think he makes a good point.
ACLJ Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy Ric Grenell reacted to the chaos on the House floor:
The Democrats have no plan. They don’t know how to respond. They’re actually making it easy for Republicans right now because their messaging feels old; it feels ineffective. And I think the attacks on Elon, the attacks on President Trump publicly . . . all of these things are really making the Democrats just look like whiners and people who are being forced to defend massive waste at USAID. Or massive waste in the federal government. And I think that they’re rudderless at this point. They’ve got to figure out what their message is.
As Ric alluded to, the far Left’s theatrics during Trump’s speech and even today on the House floor show that they are out of touch with the American people. Most Americans want a healthy economy, balanced budget, secure borders, and peace between Russia and Ukraine. And as the polls showed on Tuesday night, most American viewers responded positively to Trump’s message.
Senator John Fetterman (PA) is concerned about the far Left’s doubling down on their antics. He posted on X:
A sad cavalcade of self owns and unhinged petulance.
It only makes Trump look more presidential and restrained.
We’re becoming the metaphorical car alarms that nobody pays attention to—and it may not be the winning message.
Fetterman recognizes that the far Left can’t win with their theatrics. His side needs a “winning message” if they want to win future elections. We’ll see if the far Left heeds Fetterman’s warning or continues its histrionics.
As we’ve told you, the ACLJ launched a $500k ad campaign to fight the taxpayer-funded media blitz against Pregnancy Resource Centers in Massachusetts. We are using print, television, and digital advertising to combat the lies of the smear campaign with the truth. On top of that, we also filed a lawsuit to stop the mass deception.
