James Comey Turned Himself in Following DOJ Indictment

Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted . . . AGAIN. This latest indictment centers on the odd “8647” formation he photographed and posted on social media. The embattled director has since turned himself in to federal authorities. One has to wonder: What lies ahead for Comey?

I’m not sure what Comey was thinking when he took the time to post it to social media, but as the former head of the FBI, you’d think he’d know that threats against a U.S. President aren’t usually taken lightly. And his “Aw shucks, I didn’t know” excuse doesn’t really hold water. And questions remain on how the formation was actually created.

It’s fairly common knowledge – particularly among people of Comey’s generation – that “86” is code to “get rid of” or “kill” something. And there aren’t many other ways to interpret “8647,” considering Trump is our 47th President.

Comey surrendered himself in Virginia, even though this indictment is out of the Eastern District of North Carolina, the Eastern Division. It’s a two-count indictment that essentially says Comey is being indicted in violation of Title 18 U.S. Code § 871A, making a threat against the President or successors to the presidency, as well as Title 18 U.S. Code § 875C, which covers communications containing ANY threat to kidnap or injure another person.

So, in this instance, the seashell post could be interpreted as either, and/or both. And both counts are punishable by fines or imprisonment of not more than five years, or both.

There have been critics saying that the Trump Administration is just making an example out of Comey – almost making him a scapegoat in the wake of the attempts on the President’s life. That may be true. I don’t know. That doesn’t mean it’s not justified. It’s undeniable that we’ve had far too many recent threats on the President – to the point we’re almost getting used to them, which is unacceptable no matter who is in office.

Will Comey see any real jail time out of this? I’d caution everyone to manage their expectations.

The hateful, venomous rhetoric has gotten far too extreme in this country. It’s got to stop. And maybe people need to be reminded that these threats, whether sincere or sarcastic, will not be taken lightly. There will be consequences, even for the former head of the FBI.

I also can’t help thinking that at least a part of Comey likes this. You’ve got to remember, he is also a bit of a showman himself. He clearly loves the cameras and never misses an opportunity to get in front of one.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a moment that he’s quietly been waiting for ever since he posted that picture on social media. He’s too smart not to have known what he was saying. Or at least how it would be received. And now, the name “James Comey” is back in the news. This might even lead to another book deal.

Today’s Sekulow broadcast included more analysis of the indictment against James Comey and what will likely happen after he is arraigned. We were also joined by Special Presidential Envoy Ric Grenell to discuss the various threats made against the President.
