Former FBI Director James Comey posted a message (“8647”) on Instagram possibly calling for President Donald Trump to be taken out. The White House responded to the threat against President Trump, calling it “deeply concerning.”

Comey denied that he knew that the message could be interpreted as calling for an assassination attempt: “It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind.” However, President Trump told Fox News’ Brett Baier. “He knew exactly what that meant. A child knows what that meant. If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know what that meant, that meant assassination.”

Now anyone in America likely understands that the slang term “86” means – at a minimum – to get rid of something. Personally, I’ve always associated it with killing something. When you have a sitting U.S. President who has undergone two assassination attempts, it’s impossible to understand it in any other way.

In the past, Comey has been open about his vitriol toward President Trump. And let’s be honest: Someone of his stature could have several followers who could be radicalized. It’s a very dangerous statement, and it’s incredibly hard to believe that the former Director of the FBI wouldn’t know this particular common term for violence.

Now let me play devil’s advocate for a minute. Let’s assume that Comey truly didn’t know of a violent connotation with “86.” Let’s just say he thought it meant to get rid of something – he didn’t like his lunch order and decided to “86” the leftovers.

At the very least, he likely understood his Instagram post to mean to remove Trump from office. We all know very well that he has a history of trying to make this happen by obtaining illegal FISA warrants, sending FBI agents after former U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Flynn, and relying on a fake dossier to start “Crossfire Hurricane.” He used his position in an attempt to remove his chief political enemy: President Trump.

Now some are calling for Comey to be put in jail because of the post. We are free speech advocates at the ACLJ, so that’s a slippery slope.

However, threats against a U.S. President must be taken seriously, and there are consequences for such threats. The DOJ would have to determine if a criminal case could be made against Comey. I have a hard time seeing the time and taxpayer money spent on such an endeavor. Though it wouldn’t shock me if, at the very least, current FBI Director Kash Patel sends some FBI agents to interview Comey to give him a taste of his own medicine.

I hope the backlash against Comey’s post will discourage public officials from using such inflammatory rhetoric. It is truly dangerous in our current political climate. All you need is for one radical to take the call for violence seriously.

Also in the news, FBI Director Patel just announced that the FBI stopped a mass shooting at a military base. The culprits behind the planned attack were part of ISIS.

It’s encouraging to know that the current Administration can properly identify true terrorists. We told you how during the Biden Administration, the U.S. Army (at Fort Bragg) was labeling pro-life organizations and drivers with “Choose Life” license plates as terrorists.

Upon hearing this news, the ACLJ filed a Freedom of Information Act request, demanding answers into this training. We also sent a demand letter to Biden’s Army Secretary, demanding that such targeting cease immediately. Over time, our FOIA uncovered an outrageous cover-up of training soldiers to target pro-lifers that had been going on for almost 15 years.

We also just sent a letter to President Trump’s new military leadership, specifically Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll, bringing our findings to their attention and urging them to take action to weed out this nonsense from our military training doctrine. This is the only way to make things right for our client and all pro-life Americans.

But as Patel’s announcement shows, the FBI might finally be going after the real threats, not pro-lifers. We will make sure the current DOJ does not improperly target pro-lifers.
