Trump as House Speaker? “Whatever’s Best for the Country”
Who will be the new Speaker of the House after Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL-1) was successful in his push to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (CA-20)? When asked if he would serve, President Trump said he would pursue what is “best for the country and for the Republican Party,” and Rep. Jim Jordan (OH-4) has thrown his hat in the ring.
We have complete chaos in the House. McCarthy is the first Speaker in U.S. history to be vacated from his position. And while the Democrats look unified – every single Democrat in the House sided with Gaetz’s efforts – the Republican Party is in disarray.
Is Trump a legitimate candidate for Speaker? If McCarthy was a controversial figure, I don’t see the House having enough votes to replace him with Trump.
Can you imagine Trump sitting behind President Biden at the next State of the Union address? While being considered for the Speaker position is an honor, Trump will likely focus on another bid for the presidency.
Rep. Jordan is a longtime friend of the ACLJ and has done terrific work as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in exposing the FBI for its targeting of conservatives and Christians. Jordan has been a great ally in fighting back against the Biden Administration’s overreach.
Even though Jordan might have several backers from conservative Republicans to be the next Speaker, it’s still uncertain if he can garner enough support from moderate Republicans.
A bigger question is, will Republicans be able to reconcile after this historic – and divisive – removal? How will this event affect the Republican Party as the country gears up for the 2024 presidential election?
Senator Marsha Blackburn (TN) joined the broadcast, and we asked her about the impact on the U.S. Senate of not having a Speaker of the House. She said that many of the House committees are unable to meet, spending bills can’t be passed, and securing the border can’t be a primary focus. No legislation is being sent to the Senate.
Speaking of the border, Senator Blackburn touched on the 85,000 missing migrant children in the U.S. because of the Biden Administration’s failures:
I sent a letter back over to [HHS] to find out what they’re doing to locate these children. Because these children, we do not know their whereabouts. We do not know their condition. We do not know if they’re being used as drug runners or if they’re being used in labor gangs or if they’ve been forced into an MS-13 gang or if they’re being put into a sex trafficking ring – and we know the cartels do this. The cartels have turned human trafficking into a $150 billion-a-year business.
Hearing that 85,000 migrant children are unaccounted for in our country is nothing short of heartbreaking. How can this Administration be so cruel as to allow such a humanitarian crisis to go unresolved? Biden must put an end to this cruelty.
Today’s Sekulow broadcast provided a full analysis of possible Speaker of the House replacements. Also, ACLJ Senior Counsel for Global Affairs Mike Pompeo discussed the chaos in the House as well as Biden’s advisers meeting with Saudi Arabia about the possibility of a peace deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
