Shahzad Masih was arrested for blasphemy when he was 16 – just a kid with his future before him. Despite no evidence, this young Christian was sentenced to hang. Eight years later, we are still waiting for the appeals court to hear his case and free him. Now we are asking each of you to take an action that could make a difference in this case.

Please stand with us for Shahzad by copying and pasting the message below and sending it directly to Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Federal Minister for Law and Justice for the Government of Pakistan.

Re: Capital Sentence Reference No. 13-B-2023; Criminal Appeal No. 77528 of 2022

Your Excellency:

We write to you to draw your government’s attention to Shahzad Masih, who has spent over eight years and five months in prison due to a false accusation of blasphemy.

The injustice done to this young man will become apparent to anyone who reviews the record of the case.

Notably, the FIR filed against Shahzad alleged that he committed blasphemy. However, all the prosecution witnesses, including the complainant, testified at trial that Shahzad told them that one Ali, a friend of his father, had blasphemed. This does not constitute blasphemy on Shahzad’s part.

Further note that the Superintendent of Police stated in his investigation report and testified at trial that he did not observe any blasphemy in Shahzad’s conversation.

Yet, after a trial that took five years, Shahzad was sentenced to death on November 22, 2022. His appeal has been pending before the Lahore High Court for over three years.

Shahzad’s attorneys have filed at least four petitions requesting the High Court to hear his appeal. Each time a hearing was scheduled, but the case was not heard.

In light of the undisputed evidence on record, Shahzad’s rights to due process and fair trial have already been violated. The continued delay in hearing his appeal is causing further and grave prejudice against him.

We respectfully request that the Government of Pakistan review his case and provide justice to this young man.

Respectfully submitted,
