UNHINGED Virginia AG Candidate Jay Jones Rocks the Left
Listen tothis article
It’s beyond shocking: “Three people, two bullets. Gilbert, Hitler and Pol Pot. Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.” Those are the words that far-Left Virginia Attorney General candidate Jay Jones texted about then-Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert. Political violence is out of control in this country, and now a state’s AG candidate is on record with stating he’d shoot and commit other violent acts against an opponent and his family. Have we really sunk this far?
Jones allegedly texted Delegate Carrie Coyner, a conservative colleague in the Virginia House of Delegates, expressing outrage that conservative leaders were publicly praising a moderate Democrat who had recently passed away. Apparently, these seemingly unhinged messages escalated from angry criticism into violent fantasies involving prominent conservative figures.
As reported:
Virginia Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones once remarked on shooting the Virginia House speaker in texts with another lawmaker, the latest example of charged political rhetoric some have called the politics of “rage.”
Texts obtained by Fox News Digital Friday showed an August 2022 conversation between Jones — then a recently departed delegate from Norfolk — and another lawmaker after the death of Del. Joe Johnson, D-Bristol, at age 90. . . .
At the time, several House Republicans — including leadership — offered eulogizing words for Johnson, who had been known as an aisle-crossing, friendly moderate. One of those who had kind words for Johnson was then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah.
Jones told Coyner that Johnson “leaked everything to your [Republican] caucus. It’s why Gilbert gave him such a glowing tribute.” . . .
Jones continued, adding, “Three people, two bullets. Gilbert, Hitler and Pol Pot. Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.”
Jones reportedly went on to text that he hoped Gilbert’s children “die in their mother’s arms.”
As Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears summed it up: “Jay Jones fantasizes about murdered little children lying lifeless in their mother’s arms. And yet he runs for attorney general, our chief law enforcement officer.”
Sadly, this is not the first time Jay Jones has been accused of endorsing violence, either. Jones was once accused of proposing that more dead cops might be a good thing. The question now is: Should he, or maybe how can he possibly, remain a viable candidate? Should a man who even talks about murdering a political opponent be given the job of AG, of all jobs? Even if he were joking, it would indicate a real lack of good judgment, at best.
Jones has since canceled some fundraising events in the aftermath of his vile statements being exposed, but he has continued to receive support from prominent far-Left allies, including U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (VA), who was scheduled to appear at one event alongside Jones. While former VP candidate Kaine publicly condemned the language Jones used as “indefensible,” he stopped short of withdrawing his endorsement, citing a flimsy argument that early voting in the state had already begun.
Many are calling for Jones to remove himself from the race, saying he’s shown he is unworthy of such a serious position. Even President Trump took to social media to share his outrage:
It has just come out that the Radical Left Lunatic, Jay Jones, who is running against Jason Miyares, the GREAT Attorney General in Virginia, made SICK and DEMENTED jokes, if they were jokes at all, which were not funny, and that he wrote down and sent around to people, concerning the murdering of a Republican Legislator, his wife, and their children. Abigail Spanberger, who is running for Governor, is weak and ineffective, and refuses to acknowledge what this Lunatic has done. Even Democrats are saying it is “RESIGNATION FROM CAMPAIGN” TERRITORY. Democrat Jay Jones should drop out of the Race, IMMEDIATELY, and the People of Virginia must continue to have a GREAT Attorney General in Jason Miyares who, by the way, has my Complete and Total Endorsement — JASON WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!
Jones had no choice but to release a half-hearted mea culpa days after the texts became public, stating that he takes “full responsibility” and that his own words “made [him] sick to [his] stomach, embarrassed, ashamed, and sorry.” Jones later added that “violent rhetoric has no place in our politics” before choosing to disqualify his apology by trying to play the “what I did was bad but what about them” game, accusing his opponent, current AG Jason Miyares, of exploiting the controversy to distract from policy debates and “rescue [his] desperate campaign.” His response framed the race as a referendum on whether “Trump can control Virginia or Virginians control Virginia.”
However, the bottom line is clear: No one should ever invoke the killing of a political opponent’s children, period.
Today’s Sekulow broadcast included more analysis of the shocking comments from Virginia AG candidate Jay Jones. U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions Ric Grenell joined us to discuss Jack Smith’s efforts to spy on Members of Congress, as well as California gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter’s refusal to answer questions about working with conservative voters.
