UK Terror Suspects Released on Bail

The British police just released the five suspected terrorists ON BAIL after a farmer turned them in for potentially threatening a UK airbase used by the U.S. military.

Is Iran behind the foiled plot?

United Kingdom police are releasing five terror suspects on bail Monday after they were arrested on suspicion of a terror plot targeting a U.S. air base in Britain this weekend.

Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing, confirmed that investigations into the five men are ongoing, “including ⁠that this may be actively committed by proxies or ⁠individuals either knowingly or unknowingly working on ⁠behalf of a foreign state.” Meanwhile, the Iranian Embassy in the U.K. has denied any connection to the five men.

The Sunday night arrests came after a local resident and farmer in Gloucestershire told the BBC that she had called police late in the evening after coming across three white vans blocking a road near RAF Fairford air base. As she turned her car around, she told the BBC that her headlights illuminated a group of “hooded and masked men” who “panicked” upon being spotted and scrambled into a nearby woods.

This is a very real example of “see something, say something.” The five men were arrested after a local farmer noticed three suspicious white vans blocking a road near RAF Fairford near London in the middle of the night. The vehicles appeared to be heading toward the military facility. The farmer reported seeing that the individuals were wearing masks and “slim-fitting clothes.”

There were enough red flags for the farmer to call police, and authorities ultimately took action, arresting five men under the UK’s Explosives Act and Terrorism Act. That call, and the citizen’s vigilance, were pivotal in getting authorities involved and foiling the plot before something terrible could be pulled off. She potentially saved numerous lives.

RAF Fairford is used by the United States as a staging location to conduct military operations, including operations against Iran. Investigators have reportedly been examining whether there could be an Iranian connection to the suspected plot. Iran, for its part, has denied any involvement. It has already warned that no base that houses U.S. military in the Middle East will be safe. Perhaps Iran has decided to expand that threat globally.

But for now, just days after their arrests, all five men have been released on police bail. UK counterterrorism officials are emphasizing that this does not mean the investigation is over. The men remain under investigation and are reportedly subject to strict conditions governing their movement and contact with others, whatever that means.

Still, many of us are finding that decision perplexing. Authorities had cordoned off the area while they investigated the vehicles and reportedly evacuated nearby residents. Clearly the potential threat was serious enough that police were concerned about explosives or other immediate threats. It seems odd that the prime suspects would be turned loose on the streets again with assurances from the authorities that they’ll keep an eye on ’em.

I can’t help drawing comparisons to another separate UK story involving a former Hamas security figure who was actually granted asylum and permanent residency in the United Kingdom despite his previous connection to the organization and an arrest in Egypt for smuggling weapons into Gaza.

Despite his record, British authorities had no issue granting him asylum and letting him loose in their country. He was later accused of involvement in planning terrorist activity targeting Jewish and Israeli people in Europe on the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks.

Those are two very different cases, and we shouldn’t assume that they are connected simply because they involve terrorism in the United Kingdom. But they raise serious questions surrounding security, immigration and how British authorities identify and handle potential threats before they become attacks. It’s not very reassuring.
