Senator Calls in FBI for Critical Texas Battle

President Donald Trump said the FBI could start tracking down a number of far-Left Texas House Members who fled the state in a clear effort to stall a Republican-backed redistricting effort. The announcement came on the heels of Senator John Cornyn (TX) asking the FBI to take action to help locate, arrest, and investigate multiple Texas lawmakers who had fled the Lone Star State.

As reported by the New York Times:

Cornyn, who is facing a primary challenge for his Senate seat from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, made the request in a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, where he described the 57 absentee Democrats – some of whom appear to be holed up in Illinois and New York – as “potential lawbreakers.”

“Since these state legislators are currently outside of Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety may need support to arrest the fleeing lawmakers,” the senator wrote.

“I request the FBI’s assistance, as federal resources are necessary to locate the out-of-state Texas legislators who are potentially acting in violation of the law,” Cornyn continued. “The FBI has tools to aid state law enforcement when parties cross state lines, including to avoid testifying or fleeing a scene of a crime.”

Texas is in the middle of a special legislative session to discuss and hopefully vote on a number of issues, including the Republican-proposed redrawing of the congressional maps, which is the job of the state legislature. But far-Left politicians in Texas decided to pull a political stunt and flee the state.

In their absence, no business of the state legislature can move forward. These elected officials ran and hid in cities like Chicago and New York – adding another layer to the term “sanctuary cities” – to avoid being forced to return to vote. They’re elected officials shirking the duties they took an oath to fulfill.

They’ve chosen to hide so there cannot be a quorum, meaning there are not enough members of the legislative body to vote, or even to be in session.

Talk about political gameplay backfiring. These far-Left Texas Representatives want to hide. Now the FBI is going to seek.

Also, California Governor Gavin Newsom is chiming in – never one to miss a chance to insert himself into an issue – essentially saying, Hey, we want to do what they’re doing in Texas, but we’ll create more far-Left districts.

I asked Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions of  the United States Ric Grenell to respond to his state’s governor jumping on this attempted gerrymandering bandwagon:

Well, let’s make one thing very clear. Gavin Newsom is not playing politics simply because Texas is doing it. It is exactly because this is what Gavin always does. I don’t think we should be surprised that when politicians have power, they’re going to do everything to help their party. So, we see this from both parties. It goes back and forth constantly, but at some point, I think the states are going to have to take this redistricting out of the hands of their people and make it a process that’s much more geared toward the public. . . . The rhetoric is crazy, and let’s be clear on one thing: The Democrats do this all of the time, and Republicans are slow to do it, but when they do, . . . they have the media attacking them.

Ric was also quick to point out that this is not just the strategy of the far Left, but he believes President Trump won’t let it slide:

I think that both sides are really playing with fire because President Trump is somebody who has been committed to making good decisions that affect the public, not necessarily just one party. And so I could see President Trump jumping in and mandating that these lines that we write are much more commonsense, geared toward the public, and coming up with some sort of a process that takes it out of the politicians’ hands directly. And I think that the time is coming when we just can’t have this complete manipulation.

A caller to the show brought up one simple but seemingly obvious point. It’s the year 2025. Why couldn’t technology take care of this problem with a computer program that simply takes the population centers and divides the districts evenly, making it fairer for everyone? That certainly seems like one of many potential options worth exploring that could end this debate.

Today’s Sekulow broadcast included more discussion of the mayhem in the Texas legislature, as well as an update on our legal fight to defund Planned Parenthood. Finally, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Georgia, my home state, and the servicemen and women and their families stationed there, after today’s horrific shooting.
