Major Lawsuit Against President Trump’s Bill
Listen tothis article
President Donald Trump faces a lawsuit following the signing of the “Big Beautiful Bill” that could wind up at the U.S. Supreme Court. Planned Parenthood promised to file a lawsuit against the Administration because the bill’s defunding mechanism, preventing Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid funding, could result in closing almost 200 abortion clinics. It’s denouncing the cut funding as a “backdoor abortion ban.”
As you know, Planned Parenthood has been a key adversary of the ACLJ for decades. We celebrated the recent victory when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states could defund the abortion giant, meaning states can choose if they wish to send taxpayer dollars to it (agreeing with the arguments of the ACLJ’s amicus brief).
And now the “Big Beautiful Bill” just delivered another big blow – one worth more than $500 million in Medicaid funding. The victories are starting to stack up against the evil abortion factory that killed more than 402,000 babies last year alone.
My brother, ACLJ Executive Director Jordan Sekulow, explained Planned Parenthood’s possible legal strategies in its lawsuit:
The argument is that it’s a targeted focus on Planned Parenthood because they also provide abortions. So they’re going to have to make the argument in court, which they don’t want to make in public, that none of this money – not a single dime – is supposed to go toward any abortion at all, any kind of abortion procedure, any facility at all that would actually do the abortion. . . .
But when [Planned Parenthood] is fundraising and when they’re speaking to the press, it’s all about [Congress] defunding Planned Parenthood as a backdoor abortion ban. So what do they say? Well, if you don’t give Planned Parenthood money, you are defunding the abortion industry, and for so long, the argument they would make to the American people and to Congress was, Don’t worry if you oppose abortion – it’s okay because that money is not going there. They’ve now switched their argument to, If you take away our money, you’re taking away abortion. Now some of that is where the debate has changed, but it’s also the clear admission of what we’ve been saying for three decades, which is that every dime that goes to Planned Parenthood is another dime toward abortion.
Planned Parenthood has a tough case to prove that it’s entitled to taxpayer dollars. No business or nonprofit should be able to argue that the government must fund it.
Combine that truth with Planned Parenthood’s sordid eugenics origins. It’s outrageous that such a depraved organization should receive taxpayer dollars.
With the looming litigation on the horizon, the ACLJ has mobilized its senior legal team to file in each Planned Parenthood case. We’re prepared to defend this defunding bill all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The ACLJ has been fighting the abortion industry for 35 years. We rejoiced when Roe was overturned. And now we are seeing very positive movements against Planned Parenthood, which is a result of decades of legal fights.
At the same time, the fight against abortion has not ceased – although many seem to think that Roe put an end to abortion nationwide. If anything, abortion laws have become even more extreme in the states that continue to kill babies at high rates.
And right now, though Planned Parenthood is struggling on the federal level, it continues to wage war on local levels. For example, in Missouri, Planned Parenthood is actively seeking to overturn pro-life legislation with a barrage of lawsuits.
As a result, the ACLJ has partnered with the Missouri Attorney General to stop Planned Parenthood’s attempt to increase abortion access in the state. Our lawyers are serving as “boots on the ground” in Missouri to fight back.
