Letitia James Alleged Fraud Sent to DOJ
Listen tothis article
President Donald Trump’s Administration is calling for New York Attorney General Letitia James to be prosecuted, saying she possibly committed fraud on her mortgage applications. Will U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi go after AG James, who prosecuted Trump in a civil case regarding his New York City properties?
William Pulte, Director of U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency, sent a letter to AG Bondi that stated:
Based on media reports, Ms. Letitia James has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms. This has potentially included 1) falsifying residence status for a Norfolk, Virginia-based home in order to secure a lower mortgage rate and 2) misrepresenting property descriptions to meet stringent requirements for government backed loans and government assistance. . . .
Ms. James, for both properties listed above, appears to have falsified records in order to meet certain lending requirements and receive favorable loan terms.
U.S. Federal Housing FHFA believes this and other alleged misconduct could be violations of the criminal code under 18 U.S.C. § 1343 (wire fraud), 18 U.S.C. § 1341 (mail fraud), 18 U.S.C. § 1344 (bank fraud), 18 U.S.C. § 1014 (false statements to a financial institution), and/or other relevant state and federal laws.
For your reference, I have also attached documentation which shows in 1983 that Ms. James and her father signed mortgage documents that stated that they were husband and wife in order to secure a home mortgage. See Exhibit F. Then, on May 4, 2000, Ms. James was listed again as “husband and wife” in documents. See Exhibit G. While this was a long time ago, it raises serious concerns about the validity of Ms. James representations on mortgage applications.
Many of the types of mortgages that James applied for – including Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae mortgages – are backed by the U.S. federal government. And if you’re misrepresenting yourself on mortgage applications, then at the end of the day, you’re defrauding the U.S. government and U.S. taxpayers.
As you can expect, President Trump sounded off on Truth Social: “Letitia James, a totally corrupt politician, should resign from her position as New York State Attorney General, IMMEDIATELY. Everyone is trying to MAKE NEW YORK GREAT AGAIN, and it can never be done with this wacky crook in office.”
The allegations against James are very serious, including possible “wire fraud,” “mail fraud,” “bank fraud,” and “false statements to a financial institution.” She could possibly face extensive fines and/or jail time if found guilty. The referral for prosecution has been sent to the DOJ, and the ball is in their court.
So again, this is the same New York AG who has tweeted statements like “No one is above the law” in her endless pursuit of taking down President Trump over his real estate. You can’t get much more ironic than this.
The rule of law must be upheld if it is proven in court that James did something illegal. At the same time, it’s important that President Trump doesn’t appear to use the DOJ to look like he’s going after James out of retribution. We don’t need the endless cycle of impeachments and political lawfare happening all over again.
Also in the news is the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the U.S. about its nuclear weapons program. Some people think we shouldn’t even be meeting with Iran in the first place. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave his thoughts:
A lot of people feel passionately that maybe we shouldn’t even be sitting down across the table from terrorist regimes, if you will. Look, I’m untroubled by the fact of the meeting. I met with terrorists. I met with the Taliban. I met with Chairman Kim in North Korea. The act of trying to engage with them – that doesn’t bother me. I get the slippery slope that it presents, but if you know what your principles are and you know the things that really matter for America to put our country first, then the fact of the meeting doesn’t bother me. . . .
Weeks after I became Secretary of State, we knew that the Obama-Kerry model of negotiating with the Iranians on the likelihood that they’d actually tell us the truth and comply with the agreement is zero. . . . We can’t let the Iranians hand us some tepid deal like they handed to President Obama, but I think President Trump comes from a different place. He has made clear he is prepared to do what it takes to dismantle the Iranian weapons program and their enrichment capabilities.
Secretary Pompeo isn’t overly optimistic about a deal being reached between Iran and the U.S. But we all hope that whatever happens, Iran is in a much weaker position and is unable to build a nuclear weapon.
