26 Articles of Impeachment Filed Against President Trump

U.S. Representative Steve Cohen (TN-9) just filed 26 articles of impeachment in Congress against President Donald Trump. If the Left wins the House and Senate in November, will President Trump be removed from office?

According to the official press release from Cohen’s office:

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee and an authority on the U.S. Constitution’s impeachment provisions, today introduced 26 Articles of Impeachment against President Donald Trump. The articles cite multiple abuses of power, violations of his oath of office, the corrupt use of the pardon power, and emoluments clause violations, among other misconduct and unlawful acts. 

It’s like 2020 all over again, folks. This latest impeachment is courtesy of Cohen’s 9th congressional district, which is soon to be no more. The longtime far-Left Congressman for the Memphis area will be losing his seat because of redistricting.

According to the release, Cohen said:

Trump is clearly the most impeachable President our country has ever endured. His continued presence in office is a danger to our democracy.  That the sycophantic Republican majority in Congress is derelict in its duty does not mean that I must abandon my responsibilities.  I took an independent oath to support and defend the Constitution. That commitment compels me to introduce this resolution today. When historians write about this period, and our constituents ask who stood up to President Trump’s lawlessness, this resolution is the answer.

“The most impeachable President” is inarguably a great line. It’s tailor-made for soundbites. 

However, I want to break down some of these articles of impeachment. I mean, the first one is just “UNDERMINING DEMOCRACY—SOWING DOUBT IN ELECTIONS.” From there, some of them are very specific. Some of them are annoyingly generic.

Interestingly, 12 of the articles cite “ABUSE OF POWER.” Article 2 is “ABUSE OF POWER—WAGING WAR ON IRAN WITHOUT CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL.” That one isn’t surprising. The far Left has had that card burning a hole in their collective pocket for a while now.

It’s also apparent that some last-minute adjustments were made to the articles. Article 19 is specifically “ATTACKS ON A FREE PRESS—BANISHING REPORTERS FROM THE WHITE HOUSE FOR DISFAVORED COVERAGE.”

Many of these articles are just policy disputes. The far Left is pushing for an impeachment over policy disputes. They have dramatically lowered the bar for impeachment.

It’s also worth considering that maybe Rep. Cohen is doing this as one last hurrah to pick up a little more press on his way out the door as he retires from office. Even his statement mentions how history will write about this moment. Clearly Cohen sees himself as some kind of heroic figure in this scenario. Or at least he’s portraying himself as such.

But even if that is the case, we certainly don’t want to shrug all of this off as a publicity stunt. We know the Left in the House has been successful at this impeachment game before. Obviously, they weren’t able to remove President Trump from office, but it certainly didn’t help America.

Impeachment proceedings eat up time and immense resources. Nothing else seems to get accomplished when there’s an impeachment on the table. And the American people get frustrated. Does Cohen – or his party – really believe the country wants to go through all that again?
