President Biden finally took action to deter Iran by launching a coordinated airstrike with Britain against Houthi rebels in Yemen after the U.S. Navy recently shot down Houthi drones in the Red Sea. The Houthis have been attacking cargo vessels in the Red Sea since November, and the Biden Administration didn’t want to get involved. Why the sudden change of heart?

NBC News reports on the airstrike:

The United States and Britain launched military strikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen on Thursday, after weeks of mounting attacks by the Iran-backed militant group in the Red Sea. . . .

The U.S. and U.K. strikes targeted multiple locations with fighter jets and Tomahawks fired from Navy ships, officials said. The Air Force said that the strikes involved over 60 targets at 16 locations, and that over 100 “precision-guided munitions of various types,” were used.

The strikes were against “command and control nodes, munitions depots, launching systems, production facilities, and air defense radar systems,” U.S. Air Forces Central said in a statement.

The Houthis have made it clear that they are standing with Hamas in response to Israel’s incursion into Gaza. Most notably, the Houthis are backed by Iran, so allowing the Red Sea attacks to take place only emboldened Iran’s malicious activity in the region. All this to say, the airstrike doesn’t appear to be the end but the start of a much larger conflict in the Middle East.

Let’s do a brief rundown on the Houthis, known as Ansar Allah (“supporters of God”) in Arabic. They are an Iranian-backed, sophisticated military group operating in much of Yemen that originated in 1992.

They burst on the world stage during a rebellion against the Yemeni government. Though they had begun with relatively smaller numbers, by 2017 they reportedly had 100,000 members.

Right now, 50,000 Houthis have been deployed to fight on behalf of Hamas. They also have more munitions than other groups backed by Iran.

The ongoing Houthi conflict will have a massive global impact, especially in relation to oil prices. Plus, it will cause more instability in the Middle East with Iran. We can’t stress enough the importance of America being a strong leader on the world stage at this time.

What’s been the domestic reaction to Biden’s decision? Top Republican figures are praising Biden’s willingness to strike against the Houthis. At the same time, radical Leftists are strongly criticizing Biden’s forgoing congressional approval to launch the attack.

We must not forget that the Biden Administration took the Houthis off the Foreign Terrorist Organization list in 2021 – something the ACLJ has already filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to look into further. But clearly, the situation has gotten so dangerous that the Administration felt it must respond.

Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbart joined the show to condemn Biden’s slow response to the Houthis:

Look at the way that this Administration forecasted this attack over the last few weeks, putting it out there in broad daylight that they were going to be launching this attack, which gave the Houthis the ability to go and stockpile and put their sensitive systems and their weapon systems in place. Or the Administration would not be able to actually achieve the kinds of effects that they claim to be trying to do, which is to damage the Houthis’ ability to keep attacking these ships and attacking a global commerce essentially in the Red Sea.

Does the Administration have a clear strategy going forward? It’s highly doubtful. Unfortunately, the Administration seems more interested in cozying up to Iran – sending more money to the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world – rather than recognizing the danger that Iran poses to the West.

The Administration can’t be only reactive in its military strategy – doing so will put our soldiers at risk and force America into a war that the country isn’t prepared for.
