VICTORY: Pro Life Students vs. The Smithsonian
We represented nine students and three parents who were unlawfully targeted for their pro-life views by at least five museum staff members and security officers of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum on the afternoon of the March for Life. We took the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum to court, and we won. The museum agreed to a consent order and preliminary injunction barring this kind of unconstitutional discrimination against pro-life free speech from happening again. The settlement included a financial agreement, personal apologies to our clients, a private tour led by the museum's director, and public release of an after action report on the incident. The Smithsonian also agreed to instruct all security officers across its museums that religious and political speech on clothing is protected and will not be targeted. We set out to find out who gave the order to target pro-life individuals, and we got real accountability and real change as a result.
