The battle lines have been drawn and re-drawn and the discourse over the nation’s debt has resulted in a dead end - so far.
For many, the debt limit increase talks have less to do with money, and more to do with morals. For those whose guidepost might be social justice, or Catholic social teaching – which advocates a preferential option for the poor – what our government decides to cut or cap speaks volumes about who we are. But is there a silver bullet as the debt ceiling deadline approaches and the solution to the financial crisis gets boiled down to raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans or spending cuts to programs like Medicare and Social Security. Which path should this country take? Jordan Sekulow, Director of Policy and International Operations for the American Center for Law and Justice, and contributor to the Washington Post’s “On Faith” panel, joined Matt McClure to test the idea that perhaps what is immoral is imposing higher taxes on anyone during this country’s fiscal crisis.
