This week in Washington, D.C. our team has assembled to work on our ACLJ This Week television program. This has been a fascinating time for us as we have met with not only our Senior Research and Legal Staffs, but also Members of the United States Senate.  I just finished interviewing Senator David Vitter from Louisiana.  In addition to talking about the devastation of Katrina, we spent a good deal of time talking about the de-funding of Planned Parenthood.  Senator Vitter has proposed legislation that would actually stop the tens of millions of dollars flowing from tax payers to Planned Parenthood.  This money indirectly goes to the support of abortion related activities.  It is now time for this process to stop.

I also had the opportunity to meet with Senator John Ensign from Nevada.  Senator Ensign is very concerned about judicial activism.  When you look at issues like partial birth abortion and other matters that the Senate engages in, the concern is that the Supreme Court pays barely lip service to the deliberative decisions of the Senate.  He has also proposed legislation that would prohibit minors from being taken across state lines for abortions. We actually litigated the case that served as a basis for this legislation.  In our case, a 17 year old had an abortion arranged for by a guidance counselor.  The student lived in a state that had parental notice requirements.  The guidance counselor arranged for an abortion to take place out of state where no parental notification was necessary.  Senator Ensign has proposed legislation that would make that action illegal.

We are hopeful that our new ACLJ This Week programs will be ready for airing in the next week or ten days.  We produced 18 special programs that will keep you current as to what is happening in our nations capital.  For additional information go to ACLJ.org.
