Trump nominates Kavanaugh, a judge with a mixed record on conservative issues
The Center Square - President Donald Trump announced Monday that he will nominate Judge Brett Kavanaugh, a 53-year-old-judge from Washington, D.C., to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court.
“There is no one in America more qualified for this position and no one more deserving,” President Donald Trump said in speech announcing the nomination.
Kennedy’s status as a swing vote, frequently voting with Democrats on issues like abortion and gay rights, caused some to speculate that the Supreme Court would shift to the right with a Trump nominee. However, Kavanaugh may not move the court as far to the right as some expected considering his stance on Roe v. Wade and his previous ruling on the Affordable Care Act.
