President Trump will announce his Supreme Court nominee on Saturday and the Senate has the votes to confirm that nominee to the bench.
On today’s Jay Sekulow Live, we discussed the breaking news that, in a surprise move, Senator Mitt Romney has announced that he is supporting a Senate vote on the President’s Supreme Court nominee before the November 3rd election. The President has said he will name his SCOTUS pick on Saturday.
Senator Lindsey Graham talked about a Democrat attempt to block confirmation on Fox News:
I’ve seen this movie before, it’s not going to work. It didn’t work with Kavanaugh. We've got the votes to confirm Justice Ginsburg's replacement before the election. We're going to move forward in the committee, we're going to report the nomination out of the committee to the floor of the United States Senate so we can vote before the election. Now, that's the constitutional process.
When I got into the office it was breaking news that with Senator Mitt Romney’s pledge to support a floor vote on President Trump’s Supreme Court pick, Republicans have the votes to confirm a constitutional conservative to the Supreme Court before the election.
Senator Gardner came on board last night and of course Senator Romney made his announcement that he was supporting the floor vote. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins have said they oppose a vote prior to the election, which is their prerogative, but regardless of their position, there are now 51 votes in favor of allowing the nomination to go to the floor of the U.S. Senate. It is worth noting that there is a possibility that Senators Collins and Murkowski could still possibly vote for the nominee. Their public statements have been against the confirmation process and the vote moving forward, not necessarily against a particular nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court.
I’m not declaring victory, by the way. We don’t even have the nominee’s name yet. But I do trust that President Trump is going to nominate a constitutional conservative to the Supreme Court and that person is going to excite all of us conservatives.
