Trump Indicted in Georgia: What Happens Next?
The Deep State shows a total disregard for the role of the legal profession by indicting President Trump and 18 others (mostly lawyers defending the President) under Georgia’s state racketeering statute related to the 2020 election. This is the Deep State’s fourth indictment against President Trump, and it’s a doozy with 41 total charges for everyone involved.
According to Fox News:
Former President Trump was indicted out of the years-long criminal investigation led by state prosecutors in Georgia into his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state.
Former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, attorneys Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, Jenna Ellis, Kenneth Chesebro, Jeff Clark, John Eastman, and others, were also charged out of the years-long investigation. . . .
Georgia Fulton County [District] Attorney Fani Willis gave Trump and the 18 other defendants until Aug. 25 to surrender. Willis, Monday night during a press conference, said she would like a trial to take place within six months.
If you combine the 14 latest charges in this fourth indictment with all the other charges in the two federal cases and the two state cases levied against Trump, he could face up to roughly 800 years in prison if convicted.
My dad, ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow, summarized the charges by saying the practice of law has been criminalized. Because as we see right now, if you practice law by defending Trump, then you run the risk of being indicted. What kind of trend does this set for the future where legal challenges to elections are turned into RICO cases?
Going to court after an election is nothing new – nor is it bizarre to go to court even on election day. It happens all the time across the country in numerous elections. Don’t forget how the 2000 presidential election between Bush and Gore was litigated in court until December of that year. But with this latest Deep State indictment, we face a chilling future where lawyers are punished for doing their jobs.
For example, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is one of the defendants who’s been charged. One of the charges against Giuliani relates to legal positions being advocated at public hearings on behalf of their clients. And that is now the basis of a RICO charge. Are you kidding me?
Don’t forget that Alan Dershowitz on our show recently reminded us that tyrants often outlaw free speech and then put their political opponents’ lawyers in jail too. My dad is rightfully outraged about this blatant attack on the legal profession:
Lawyers in America should be up in arms. . . . As a lawyer, I’m incensed by the allegations. 41 counts, most of which are lawyers doing their job. You do realize most of the defendants here are lawyers? I want everybody to hear that. They’ve gone after the lawyers, saying that the lawyers were involved in a racketeering influence corrupt organization scheme on the election. . . . If we don’t stand up for these lawyers, there is no way the country survives.
Scaring lawyers into being afraid to take cases is sheer tyranny. We expect to see this in Communist Russia from decades ago. These tactics should never be happening in America. Just being associated with the accused means you are also a criminal now.
Does the lawyer’s oath to defend their client and uphold the law mean nothing? The landscape has changed so much in the years since my dad and I personally defended Trump. We’re used to people being disrespected for having opposing political views, but we can’t allow people to be labeled criminals. It’s a sad day for America.
We can’t stand idly by while our right to free speech and defend the rule of law is attacked. What kind of America do we want to live in? We must all speak out for freedom.
Today’s Sekulow broadcast also featured ACLJ Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy Ric Grenell, who gave his take on the latest indictment levied against Trump. We also discuss a major victory in a religious liberty case involving a senior complex that banned Bible studies for its residents.
