Striving for a more perfect union, it’s time for responsible police reform.

On today’s Jay Sekulow Live, we discussed the JUSTICE Act, supported and proposed by South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, and how we can all get activated. The entire Senate majority is supporting it, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has criticized it.

Senator Tim Scott talked about the legislation at a press briefing yesterday:

I think this package speaks very clearly to the young person who is concerned, when he’s stopped by the law enforcement officers, we see you. And so what does this package do? Three major areas. One is on the area . . . we have to have the right information so that we can direct our resources as a federal government to making sure that the outcomes lead to safer officers and safer suspects in the instances of challenges.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has set an aggressive schedule for this. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, just before we went on the air, said she’d like to see the legislation get to a conference.

ACLJ Director of Government Affairs Thann Bennett made the following point:

Speaker Pelosi said that we’d like to end up in conference. That means a conference committee between a House bill and a Senate bill. That’s how Congress is supposed to work. That’s a very different tone than we heard from Leader Schumer who didn’t even want to proceed to the Senator Tim Scott bill.

I will tell you and I don’t say this very often, Speaker Pelosi is correct here. If you look at the House bill and look at the Senate bill, there is a lot of overlap. Are there areas of disagreement? Yes there are. Those would have to be worked out. My guess would be that many of those issues would have to be left aside. There is a lot of agreement between the two bills. Speaker Pelosi is correct. These two bills should end up in conference. How do you end up in conference? You have to pass a bill out of the Senate.

We’ve posted a brand new blog, called The Senate Can’t Stay Silent – It is Time to Debate the JUSTICE Act and at the bottom of the blog we have the information of the Senators who we believe you need to call directly to encourage them and ask them to vote so they can begin this important debate on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Instead of just calling the switchboard, we’ve given you the direct number to their Senate office. For more information click here.

We at the ACLJ support the JUSTICE Act and encourage you to take action.

The full broadcast is complete with more discussion by our team of the JUSTICE Act and the legislative process involved.
