President Trump Just Announced He's Running for President
While it’s only been a little over a week since the 2022 midterm elections – for which we’re still waiting to hear official final results – the race for the White House in 2024 has officially begun, courtesy of former President Donald Trump.
Last night, as expected, President Trump confirmed to the world that he'll once again make a bid for the White House, officially announcing his candidacy for President in 2024.
Trump addressed the media and gathered supporters from his Mar-a-Lago, Florida home announcing his intentions prefaced by a familiar rallying cry:
In order to make America great and glorious again, I am announcing tonight my candidacy for President of the United States.
During his speech, President Trump was more reserved than he has been in the past. In fact, the mainstream media – which has never shied away from eviscerating him in its coverage – seemed stymied by his restraint. President Trump promised to be a unifier, saying he loved both sides – referring to conservatives and liberals, supporters and non, etc. – and called himself the only force capable of battling the corruption in Washington.
The former President also explained he was running because he believes his former opponent President Joe Biden has essentially driven our country into a ditch:
I am running because I believe the world has not yet seen the true glory of what this nation can be. We have not reached that pinnacle, believe it or not. "In fact, we can go very far. We're going to have to go far. First, we have to get out of this ditch. And once we're out, you'll see things that nobody imagined for any country. It's called the United States of America. And it's an incredible place.
President Trump again promised his supporters that he would be their voice:
I am your voice. I am your voice. The Washington establishment wants to silence us, but we will not let them do that. What we have built together over the past six years is the greatest movement in history because it is not about politics. It's about our love for this great country, America, and we're not going to let it fail.
This is one of the earliest announcements ever by a presidential candidate. The 2024 presidential race begins now. But the response seems to be a bit mixed, even among conservatives. I put the question to our ACLJ members as to what they thought about President Trump’s speech last night, as well as how they are feeling about his candidacy. Truthfully the responses were all over the map. Some callers were ecstatic about a Trump return, while others were more measured, saying they loved his policies but would prefer a more traditional candidate this time. Others even called the former President toxic, and complained that he had attacked or alienated other conservatives.
One thing that’s certain, while we don’t have any official confirmations of would-be opponents to President Trump for the GOP nomination, it certainly seems like a given that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is going to throw his hat into the ring as well. The road to the White House will not be a dull one. We will keep you informed every step of the way.
Today’s full Sekulow broadcast includes further in-depth discussion of President Trump’s press conference and the implications that his running will have for other Republican hopefuls, as well as on the race for the Republican nomination, which it’s important to remember is still a long way away.
