President Donald Trump’s tweets made a surprising shift in tone Monday when he followed Pope Francis’ message on Twitter and offered to help Charlie Gard, a terminally ill baby at the center of a legal debate in the U.K. and suddenly part of a global conversation.

While Americans last week focused on the fate of health care in our nation, the case of Charlie Gard has left people all over the world split over an infuriating dilemma without an easy solution. What should be done? End his life or seek hope in experimental treatment?

Who is Charlie Gard and why is he sick?

The 11-month-old baby is said to suffer from a rare genetic disease — encephalomyopathy mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, which causes muscle weakness and brain damage.

The baby was said to have been born healthy and normal, but within a month, his parents had noticed that their child was unable to lift his head and support himself, The Telegraph reported. Due to his condition, he was placed on life support.
