In a significant legal development, a jury has found 27-year-old Patrick Brice guilty on four charges related to his violent assault on two elderly pro-life advocates (including our client) outside a Baltimore Planned Parenthood clinic. The prosecution of this case and ensuing conviction are incredibly encouraging as the legal system of late has been targeting those with pro-life views instead of protecting them.

Brice was convicted of two counts of second-degree assault and two counts of reckless endangerment for his unprovoked attack on Dick Schaefer and Mark Crosby. Both men were peacefully advocating for life outside the clinic when the incident occurred.

As we informed you, the assault took place on May 26, 2023. Our client, Mr. Schaefer, then 84, was standing on the sidewalk near the clinic, engaging with passersby, while Mr. Crosby, then 73, held a sign nearby. Brice approached Mr. Schaefer and initiated a conversation that quickly turned confrontational. Without warning, Brice violently slammed Mr. Schaefer into a concrete planter, rendering him unconscious. Brice then turned his aggression toward Mr. Crosby, who had run to Mr. Schaefer’s aid, striking him in the face, knocking him to the ground, and forcefully kicking him in the head.

Both men sustained significant injuries. Mr. Schaefer suffered cuts and bruises, while Mr. Crosby endured traumatic head injuries, including a fractured facial bone and temporary blindness in one eye.

Following the attack, the ACLJ worked with local law enforcement, widely disseminating Brice’s photo and video of the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward. Brice was eventually identified by law enforcement after a tip came through Metro Crime Stoppers, resulting in the identification of Brice, his arrest, and subsequent indictment.

With sentencing anticipated on March 20, 2025, Brice faces the prospect of substantial prison time. Each of the second-degree assault charges carries up to 10 years in prison and the judge could order them to be served consecutively, meaning that Brice faces up to 20 years of prison time on the assault charges.

The ACLJ remains steadfast in its commitment to defend pro-life advocates and ensure that such acts of violence are met with appropriate legal consequences.

This case sends a resounding message: Violence against peaceful pro-life advocates will not be tolerated. The right to peacefully assemble and advocate for the unborn is fundamental and must be protected – lives depend upon it.

After nearly two years of fighting for justice, this is a tremendous victory. The ACLJ will continue to stand vigilant in defense of life and constitutional freedoms.
