2018 Victories: New HHS Rule Will Block Millions of Tax Dollars from Planned Parenthood

This is the first installment in this year’s year-end series looking back at some of the numerous victories by the ACLJ in 2018.

For far too long, taxpayer dollars have been used to fund the abortion industry.

Every year under Title X (using our tax dollars as the source of its funding), the Federal Government provides grants to abortionists like Planned Parenthood for “family planning services.”

Ironic considering it continues to kill innocent babies at a heartbreaking rate of over 320,000 every year.

This year we joined 85 other pro-life groups in sending a letter to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) demanding that tax dollars no longer be used to fund Big Abortion.

Shortly after our letter, HHS announced a proposed rule that will cut taxpayer funding for abortion services providers – including Planned Parenthood – amounting to approximately $60 million taxpayer dollars. A huge step forward in our mission to defund the abortion giant.

The abortion industry was never supposed to get their claws on a dime of these Title X funds. In fact under the express language of Title X, “[n]one of the funds appropriated under this title shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.”

But for decades this provision was interpreted to merely prohibit these grants from being used to directly fund abortion by requiring financial separation between Title X projects and abortion activities – creating a perceived loophole that Big Abortion exploited over the years to fill their coffers.

Earlier this year, we filed critical formal public comments supporting this new pro-life rule to defund a large chunk of Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funds.

Once in effect, this HHS rule will effectively ban all $260 million dollars in Title X funding from going to the abortion industry, redirecting that money from abortion clinics, like Planned Parenthood, to ACTUAL family planning organizations.

This will be a crippling blow to Big Abortion and will help save countless innocent babies.
