A lawyer representing the family of an American pastor imprisoned in Iran accused the State Department Friday of going "AWOL" on the case, slamming the administration for ducking the hearing at which he and the wife of the pastor were testifying Friday.

"The State Department's refusal to appear before this committee today is extremely troubling and frankly offensive," Jay Sekulow testified, calling their absence "inexcusable."

The State Department was invited last week by Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., co-chairman of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, to the hearing Friday. A Wolf aide said despite repeated attempts they didn't hear back from the department until Thursday, when the department said no one was available.
