Kamala Harris: America’s Border Czar Is Haunted by Her Illegal Migration Failures

In early 2021, President Biden created a ball of confusion when he appointed Vice President Harris to solve the Administration’s developing illegal migration crisis at our southern border. Now, Harris’ failure to solve the root causes of the border crisis—a disaster that has caused persistent economic and crime problems for native-born Americans—has taken center stage. Harris has now assumed prominence after ruling-class Democrat elites participated in a massively anti-democratic coup. They dumped President Biden and named her the presumptive presidential nominee of the Democrat Party.

To be clear, the Biden Administration’s early infighting, shifting indecision, and weak response to the border crisis worsened Harris’ position right at the beginning of Biden’s presidency. Recently, Rep. Elise Stefanik (NY-21) put forth a resolution that denounced the Biden-Harris Administration and its “Border Czar,” Kamala Harris, for not stopping the influx of illegal crossings at the southern border. Even some news outlets, including Axios, named Harris the border czar, particularly after repeated border surges created a full-blown humanitarian, political, and crime wave crisis like the one that took the life of Laken Riley.

While the Biden Administration prefers to blame Republicans for the border crisis, it is clear beyond question that responsibility for the stunning number of border entrants can be attributed to the Biden-Harris Administration. Indeed, the Christian Science Monitor reports that as of the spring of 2024, “under the Biden administration, there have been 6.4 million encounters outside official ports of entry along the southern border so far, with the yearly average more than quadruple that of the Trump administration.” But that is not all, since the Christian Science Monitor also notes that Customs and Border Patrol “agents have registered more than 1.6 million encounters at official ports of entry with migrants deemed ‘inadmissible.’’’ Nonetheless, some have been allowed to enter the country temporarily, if not permanently.

America’s “Border Czar” has been unable to solve the border crisis. Even worse, Vice President Harris’ stubborn refusal to visit the southern border and produce serious solutions has exacerbated the situation. When asked whether she planned to visit the southern border, Vice President Harris replied, “And I haven’t been to Europe,” either. Her inability to articulate, much less formulate, a coherent strategy for solving America’s border crisis, suggests a lack of seriousness that places all Americans at risk. She continues to illustrate her unseriousness by asking voters to “see what is possible, unburdened by what has been.” This phrase is memorable for its meaninglessness.

In response, voters who recognize that crimes committed by illegal aliens surged in 2021 after declining in the previous year—crimes that included murder, sexual assault, and illegal gun possession—are rightly concerned about the Vice President’s failure to act. In addition, Americans who remain in a precarious economic position ought to worry that the Biden-Harris Administration insists that the U.S. economy is strong even though virtually all job gains are going to immigrants. This situation keeps young U.S.-born men out of the workforce. For example, the New York Post reports that as of the fourth quarter of 2023, an additional 2.7 million people were working. However, the number of immigrants in the workforce—legal and illegal—rose by 2.9 million. This means that 183,000 fewer Americans born in the U.S. were working as of the fall of 2023. These facts raise the question of whether the Biden-Harris Administration is prepared to put Americans first. This record answers that question in the negative.

The ACLJ supports measured levels of legal immigration guided by the rule of law. Progressives, including elites who populate the Biden-Harris Administration through their actions and inactions, continue to prefer illegal immigration, thus worsening the lives of many rank-and-file Americans. Join us in our fight to protect America’s border and our effort to protect the United States from all of its enemies, whether foreign or domestic.
