A Christian law firm is elated about a bombshell report revealing that the developers of the controversial "Ground Zero" mosque only own half of the site where the structure is supposed to be built.
The New York Post broke the story on Sunday that the proposed mosque site on Park Place actually comprises two buildings that were connected years ago when the common walls taken down in order to house a Burlington Coat Factory Store.
According to the report, one of the two buildings is actually owned by Con Edison and has been leased to the owner of the other building where the mosque is going to be housed. The Post reports that the public utility company is in the process of having their building appraised in order to sell it to Soho properties in order to move forward with the $100-million project.
Jordan Sekulow is director of international operations with the American Center for Law & Justice, a firm that opposes the mosque. He says thanks to the Post's expos, the developers should have to go before the New York Public Services Commission before they can buy the property.
"[That commission] can inquire about the source of the funding," he explains. "They can inquire about the environmental impact, including the security concerns that could be raised by having the mosque at Ground Zero.
"This has fundamentally changed the entire debate -- and they are up against the ropes now."
According to Sekulow, the developers have only been able to raise $200 for the project.
"If you're a Saudi businessman looking at whether or not you want to donate to this -- and now you know that everything you do is going to be put under such a microscope; and maybe you have donated to Hamas and their affiliates, and under Saudi law that may not be illegal -- you certainly don't want to lose your ability to travel to the United States or do business internationally," suggests the ACLJ spokesman.
Sekulow says the ACLJ is going to continue to fight against construction of the mosque with every means possible.
