New York Daily News - NYC Should Have Landmarked Controversial Mosque Site, New Suit Says
By Jose Martinez, Daily News Staff Writer
Opponents of a planned mosque near Ground Zero will take another shot Tuesday at derailing the controversial project.
Lawyers from a Washington-based conservative advocacy group are set to argue before a Manhattan judge that the city wrongly failed to give landmark status to 45-47 Park Place and cleared the way for the controversial project.
The 152-year-old Italian palazzo-style warehouse, two blocks north of Ground Zero, is supposed to house a Muslim prayer space and community center. Known as the Park51 project, the development was green-lighted in August by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
"This was political correctness running the issue," said Brett Joshpe, a lawyer for the American Center for Law and Justice. "Clearly, there was a degree of advocacy, too, on the part of the mayor's office."
