Shadows in the Capitol: Defining & Defeating the Deep State | American Center for Law and Justice

When unelected officials make decisions behind closed doors, they become unaccountable to the American people. Thus, the door to corruption is wide open. This government bureaucracy, or Deep State, cannot be allowed to operate without being held accountable.

We started our Government Accountability Project after the IRS targeted Tea Party groups. These groups, with names including descriptors like "liberty" or using words that expressed their Christian faith or pro-life view, were flatly denied tax-exempt status. After numerous groups reached out to us, in an unprecedented move, the ACLJ challenged the IRS directly. Ultimately, the IRS apologized to the Tea Party groups and we secured a victory.

Using tools like Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, the ACLJ is equipped to take on the Deep State, which – even in the face of our growing court victories – is still working in secret. It's our responsibility to hold our leaders accountable. This is one more reason why the ACLJ is needed now more than ever.
