A lawyer representing the James Madison Elementary School second-grader whose religious Valentine’s Day messages were confiscated last week is asking the school district to change its stance. . . .

A letter sent by the American Center for Law and Justice to Superintendent Joe Sheehan and Madison Principal Matthew Driscoll lays out why the school district was wrong when Driscoll collected the messages — which said “Jesus loves you” and included a passage from John 3:16 — before Dexter Thielhelm, 8, and his two siblings were allowed to hand out their valentines. . . .

“I’m very hopeful when they see the case law and see 30-plus years of free speech (litigation), they’ll do the right thing,” French said. “We’re not exactly blazing a new constitutional trail here. What we want is for the school to lift any restrictions on (Dexter) engaging in free speech on school grounds. He may not want to do it tomorrow, but we want him to have the right to do it.”. . .
