Update on Broadcaster Freedom
There is breaking news of a major victory for broadcaster freedom in the U.S. Senate today. Sen. DeMints Amendment to prohibit the FCC from reinstating the Fairness Doctrine passed by an overwhelming majority vote of 87-11.
This is truly an astonishing stride forward in our efforts to preserve freedom of expression over the airwaves. During debate on the amendment, Sen. Durbin was able to secure slightly wider latitude for the FCC in terms of mandatory local programming, but the central components of the DeMint Amendment remained in tact and were approved by the Senate.
We must now work to ensure that this language stays in the bill as it completes the legislative process and is presented to the President to be signed into law. We must remain vigilant during this process, but today is a huge victory in our fight.
Thank you to all of you for standing with us for broadcast freedom.
Thank you also to Sen. DeMint for his outstanding leadership on this critical issue.
I will continue to keep you updated as things develop.
