A wave of social media support has developed for keeping a statue of Jesus Christ on national forest lands on Big Mountain. . . .

The Big Mountain Jesus page started with its own petition drive, but Pitts said those who visit the page now are referred to a national petition being led by the American Center for Law and Justice, an organization that has had legal tangles in the past with the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

The American Center's website claims that 44,838 people "have joined this cause online" as signatories to a letter that will be forwarded to the Forest Service. . . .
