UPDATE: Florida Senate Rejects Life-Saving Legislation for Terri Schiavo
I have just received word that the Florida Senate has rejected life-saving legislation for Terri Schiavo. The vote 21-18. The defeat comes just minutes after Florida Governor Bush urged lawmakers to act and pass legislation. At the same time, the Governor says there is new medical evidence to show that Terri is not in a persistent vegitative state, which the Florida courts have concluded. He wants a new investigation to take place and says he will do whatever he can to save Terri.
After the full panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit rejected an appeal this afternoon from Terri's parents, the legal focus now turns to the Supreme Court of the United States. When the attorneys for the parents file a petition with the high court, it will go to Justice Kennedy who is likely to ask the full court to weigh in on this issue. As I have said before, any appeal to the Supreme Court is an uphill battle.
I will keep you posted when new developments occur.
