The Filibuster Fight
I am in meetings with members of the Senate and their staff and communicating with them that some 30,000 people from across the nation have signed on to our petition in the past few weeks urging the Senate to make a rules change - putting the judicial filibuster off limits and giving President Bush's judicial nominees an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor.
I sense that this issue will continue to unfold in the days and weeks ahead. I also know that the opposition to ending the filibuster - groups like Planned Parenthood and People for the American Way - are well organized and well-funded as this showdown approaches.
This is a very important time in Washington. There's a lot at stake. I have said many times this battle over judicial nominees is simply a prelude for a vacancy on the Supreme Court of the United States. And what unfolds in the weeks ahead will definitely set the tone for expected Supreme Court vacancies.
