The nomination of John Roberts as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States means a busy summer in Washington in preparation for the confirmation hearings that will take place at the end of August/early September.

The American Center for Law and Justice is poised to play a critical role in the confirmation process as it unfolds on Capitol Hill.  The ACLJ's legislative affairs office has been distributing background material on John Roberts, an accomplished Supreme Court advocate who has served as a federal appeals court judge for the past two years.  As preparations begin for the confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, the ACLJ is working to ensure that members of the committee get the facts about John Roberts - a nominee who has the reputation of interpreting the Constitution, not legislating from the bench.

As the liberal activist groups continue their push to oppose Roberts, the ACLJ is countering that with an effective communications campaign via email, the internet, radio, television, phones and mail.  Within hours after President Bush made the announcement, the ACLJ sent an email to nearly 900,000 of its supporters encouraging them to sign on to the online petition supporting the nomination of John Roberts.

The summer recess provides an excellent opportunity for our legislative team to continue work with Senate staff members - getting them information about Roberts and keeping them informed about the growing support for the nominee.

We will keep you posted as developments unfold.
