Supreme Court Nominee Harriet Miers
With the nomination of White House counsel Harriet Miers by President Bush as a nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States, the focus now turns to the confirmation process.
ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow has worked with Harriet Miers during her time as White House counsel. And, Jay points out that Miers led a very important battle against the American Bar Association urging the ABA to reject a pro-abortion stance by the legal organization. She did not succeed and the ABA unfortunately adopted a pro-abortion position. But Harriet Miers made a bold move - certainly a move that was not "politically correct" at the time.
We will learn more about Harriet Miers in the days and weeks ahead. But we heard from her this morning and without question she embraces a sound, conservative judicial philosophy. Consider her own words spoken today at the announcement of her nomination.
"The wisdom of those who drafted our Constitution and conceived our nation as functioning with three strong and independent branches have proven truly remarkable. It is the responsibility of every generation to be true to the founders' vision of the proper role of the courts in our society. If confirmed, I recognize that I will have a tremendous responsibility to keep our judicial system strong, and to help ensure that the courts meet their obligations to strictly apply the laws and the Constitution."
