John Roberts - The 17th Chief Justice
As the Supreme Court of the United States begins a new term, Chief Justice John Roberts is now at the helm of the high court - clearing the U.S. Senate with an impressive confirmation vote.
The vote was 78-22 to confirm and what's interesting is the division among Democrats. The Democratic vote was split right down the middle - 22 for confirmation and 22 opposing confirmation.
Our legislative team, which worked to ensure support for the nomination of John Roberts, saw firsthand the frustration exhibited by many Democratic Senators who were unable to pin down John Roberts on issues. As we have said all along, it is certainly appropriate for a nominee to discuss judicial philosophy, but not appropriate to discuss specific legal views and conclusions on issues and cases likely to come before the high court.
This is an important and historic time at the Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Roberts is the 17th Chief Justice of the United States and is now presiding at the high court.
