This past week, I traveled to our European Center for Law & Justice (ECLJ) offices in Strasbourg, France.  I was joined at our offices by 30 students from Regent University and Duke University School of Law who are studying human rights and international relations.  The students are also taking a course in national security law.  Former Attorney General John Ashcroft has joined our Law & Justice Institute and is a Distinguished Professor of Law and Government at Regent University.  General Ashcroft worked with our students today and taught national security law.  As you can imagine, this is a tremendous opportunity for the students to learn first-hand the importance of international relations and national security issues from the man who led the Department of Justice during 9/11.

General Ashcroft will be with us for two weeks and, in addition to teaching our students, will be meeting with ECLJ and ACLJ lawyers from around the world in our Strasbourg offices.  We will be sending out a full field report by email in the next several days concerning the progress of the work here in Europe.  It is important that we defend freedom and liberty issues internationally.  We currently have four cases pending before the European Court of Human Rights, which is the equivalent of our U.S. Supreme Court.

As you can imagine, I am still engaged in regular meetings via teleconference on the pending U.S. Supreme Court vacancy announcement.  With Chief Justice Rehnquist acknowledging that he has no plans on retiring immediately, all focus is now with the potential replacement for Justice OConnor.  The President has narrowed his list, and we anticipate an announcement that could be received as early as the end of this week.  Since we already have a series of cases at the Supreme Court this next term, we are very involved in the nomination process and will continue to keep you posted as the issue progresses.  For updated information as to the nomination issues, please check our postings at www.aclj.org under our In the News section.
