Congressional Action Underway to Save Terri Schiavo
It happened late last night. A decision was made in the U.S. House taking an aggressive move to keep Terri Schiavo alive. Congress will issue subpoenas this morning designed to prohibit the removal of Terri's feeding tube at 1:00pm ET today.
A statement was issued by three members of the House. The lawmakers -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas and Government Reform Committee Chairman Tom Davis of Virginia.
"Later this morning, we will issue a subpoena, which will require hospice administrators and attending physicians to preserve nutrition and hydration for Terri Schiavo to allow Congress to fully understand the procedures and practices that are currently keeping her alive," three Republican leaders said in a statement.
The lawmakers said the subpoena will be joined by a Senate investigation.
"This inquiry should give hope to Terri, her parents and friends, and the millions of people throughout the world who are praying for her safety," the statement said. "This fight is not over."
In our view, the subpoena is both legal and an appropriate response to this tragic situation. We will keep you posted on developments as they unfold. New information will be posted online in my trial notebook and don't forget to listen to my radio broadcast today for the very latest.
