The quick action by both Congress and President Bush in approving a law to protect Terri Schiavo represents an unprecedented and appropriate response to this tragic situation.

The action taken by Congress in passing Terri's Law puts the issue squarely in the federal court system.  Members of Congress acted swiftly over the weekend to resolve their differences and pass the legislation.  The leadership in both the House and Senate are to be commended for this action.

The Congressional action does a couple of things.  It moves the Terri Schiavo case into the federal court system and gives the federal courts an opportunity to review the matter thoroughly and independently of the court findings in Florida.  The enactment of Terri's Law also triggers a constitutional challenge to the measure.

The ACLJ will be representing members of Congress as this legislation moves forward.  The ACLJ will be defending the constitutionality of the measure as it moves through the federal court system.  This is a tremendously important case and we applaud Congress and President Bush for having the courage to act in this life and death matter.
