ATLANTA -- A Christian conservative legal advocate is applauding President Bush's nomination of John Roberts to become chief justice.
Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, says Roberts shares Bush's legal philosophy and falls "within the mainstream of the American people."
Sekulow bristles at reports that the Senate Judiciary Committee may question the role that John Roberts' religious beliefs will have on his jurisprudence.
He says the fact that Roberts "takes his Catholic faith seriously" should neither qualify nor disqualify him from serving as chief justice.
Sekulow adds that he expects Bush to quickly nominate another judicial conservative to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
