As the President prepares for his State of the Union message, the Senate is going to be considering the nomination of Judge Alberto Gonzales to be the next Attorney General of the United States.  As though who are familiar with our work here at the ACLJ know, weve been very close to John Ashcroft and the Department of Justice.  John Ashcroft has been an exceptional Attorney General and, I believe, will go down in history as one of the greatest Attorney Generals of all time.  His work in protecting our homeland and redirecting the entire focus of the Department of Justice has been tremendous.  I had the privilege of introducing Attorney General Ashcroft at an event here in Washington two weeks ago, and I will tell you that he has really served our country well.

I have also had the opportunity over the last four years to work closely with Judge Alberto Gonzales.  His nomination to be our nations 80th Attorney General should go through without any difficulty.  Yesterday evening in Washington, there were threats of a filibuster; however, those threats have abated and it appears that Judge Gonzales will be easily confirmed.  As Senator John Cornyn of Texas said, Securing a proper resolution to this debate is critical to the ongoing success of our global war against terrorism.  Senator Cornyn was referring to the role of the handling of Al-Qaeda terrorists once captured.  Here at the American Center for Law and Justice, we have done extensive work on this issue of the application of the Geneva Conventions to terrorists.  I encourage you to review our information posted on www.aclj.org under the section dealing with national security.

All of us are appreciative of the work of Attorney General John Ashcroft these last four years, and we look forward to working with Judge Gonzales in the days ahead.
