ACLJ Calls Opposition by People For the American Way to Supreme Court Nominee Roberts "Desperate" Attempt That Will Fail
August 24, 2005
(Washington, DC) The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), focusing on constitutional law, said today the announcement by People For the American Way (PFAW) opposing the confirmation of John Roberts to the Supreme Court of the United States represents a desperate attempt to create controversy over a nominee whose judicial philosophy of interpreting the Constitution instead of re-writing it is embraced by mainstream America.
The decision by People For the American Way to oppose the confirmation of John Roberts is predictable and reflects a desperate attempt by the liberal left that ultimately will fail, said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ, who is cited in the PFAW report issued today and who is working to support the Roberts nomination. First, PFAW argued that there were not enough documents available to examine the nominees record. Now, PFAW issues a lengthy report critical of the nominees record and judicial philosophy. The fact is that John Roberts embraces a sound judicial philosophy that focuses on interpreting the Constitution not legislating from the bench. It is that philosophy that is embraced by Roberts and by mainstream America. It is PFAW and other liberal groups that are outside the mainstream of America. Were not surprised that PFAW and others will do whatever they can to create controversy over one of the most qualified and respected nominees ever to be named to the high court. In the end, though, efforts by PFAW and others will fail and John Roberts will be confirmed as the 109th Justice to the Supreme Court of the United States.
