In a unanimous decision, the U.S. Supreme Court today issued a significant First Amendment ruling clearing the way for governments to accept permanent monuments of their choosing in public parks.  The decision comes in the case of Pleasant Grove City v. Summum, a critical First Amendment case in which the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) represented the Utah city in a challenge to a display of the Ten Commandments in a city park.

ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow presented oral arguments before the high court in November on behalf of Pleasant Grove City, UT, which accepted and displayed a donated monument of the Ten Commandments by the Fraternal Order of Eagles nearly 40 years - a case that hinges on sound precedent involving the well-established distinction between government speech and private speech.
