First, he told us abortion should be “safe, legal and rare” and that “families, not the government, ‘should be the ones making the decision.’” Then, he told us ObamaCare didn’t contain abortion. Now, President Obama and his anti-life allies are unleashing their full pro-abortion agenda.
President Obama’s true mission is not that abortion remain legal, or even expanding access to abortion – that would be bad enough. No, his true mission is making you pay for others’ abortions.
Just three days after taking office, President Obama rescinded the “Mexico City Policy,” which had for decades prevented federal taxpayer dollars from going to abortion businesses and organizations internationally. Now, U.S. taxpayers like you and I are paying for others to commit abortion around the world.
Taxpayer funding for the largest abortion provider in America, Planned Parenthood, has drastically increased during his term in office. And in the midst of a sluggish economy, when we should be trying to save every dollar we can, President Obama’s newest budget doesn’t touch Planned Parenthood’s sacred half-billion-dollar taxpayer windfall.
Yet, the way he plans to use your tax dollars to fund other people’s abortions most is through his flagship legislative accomplishment, ObamaCare. While he repeatedly promised that ObamaCare would not include abortion, we knew this to be a sham, and his advisers did too, calling his Executive Order a “magic trick.”
While hiding his true intentions from the American people, President Obama made them crystal clear to Planned Parenthood while he was campaigning to become President. In a speech before Planned Parenthood he said: “In my mind, reproductive care [i.e. abortion] is essential care. It is basic care, so it is at the center and at the heart of the [ObamaCare] plan that I propose.”
As we have seen in recent weeks, he is now directly implementing that plan. First, he is requiring that every insurance plan cover not only contraception, but abortion-inducing drugs, free of charge. Regardless of whether you are an individual with moral or religious objections, a prolife organization, a religious institution, or business owner of faith, Obama’s HHS has mandated that you pay for insurance coverage of the abortion pill.
Of course, when you make something free, you get more of it. More abortions. Paid for by taxpayers.
Now, the Obama Administration has gone even a step further. His latest HHS regulation, detailed here, requires most insurance plans (and remember ObamaCare requires everyone to have insurance) to include a $1 abortion surcharge in each month’s premium.
As Jay Sekulow, ACLJ Chief Counsel, has aptly noted, “In effect, the government is forcing you to take out your wallet and hand Planned Parenthood $12 to commit abortions.”
Not only that, but the entire scheme is almost entirely hidden from the American people.
Of course these new regulations and hidden accounting schemes aimed at making you pay for abortion without you knowing about it should not be too much of a surprise. It is the same kind of accounting gimmicks used in ObamaCare, detailed here, to hide the greatest expansion of and taxpayer funding for abortion since Roe v. Wade.
We know that in President Obama’s view an abortion prevents someone from being “punished with a baby,” and to prevent that from happening, he is willing to make you pay for it, no matter the cost.
Thousands of Americans are taking a stand with the ACLJ in defense of life and religious liberty by signing the petition to opt out of Obama’s abortion mandates. Join them by signing the petition today.
I’ve been following and writing about this case since it was being considered in the Texas legislature. Now it’s being called “ biggest abortion case at the Supreme Court in nearly 25 years.” Last night the Supreme Court temporarily blocked a pro-life Texas law from going into effect, allowing the...
This afternoon, the Supreme Court of the United States ordered to stay the Fifth Circuit’s ruling upholding the common-sense abortion restrictions passed by Texas in 2013. In a 5-4 vote with Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Scalia, Justice Thomas, and Justice Alito dissenting, the Court granted the...
In a huge victory for life this week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell promised to bring the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act up for a vote in the Senate by the end of 2015. This is a historic moment as a bill that would ban horrific late-term abortions has never before received a...
Earlier this year, an attack on a pregnant woman in Colorado that ended with the death of her unborn baby – but no charges filed for the baby’s murder – has reminded us of an often-overlooked area in the right to life battle. The American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ) has been on the forefront of...
