White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the Biden Administration’s abstaining from the U.N. vote demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. She claimed the abstention was “not about politics.” However, the U.S.’s abstention angered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who accused the U.S. of showing a lack of support for Israel (since the abstention didn’t change the outcome).

The AP News reports on the growing divide between the U.S. and Israel:

The United Nations Security Council on Monday issued its first demand for a cease-fire in Gaza, with the U.S. angering Israel by abstaining from the vote. Israel responded by canceling a visit to Washington by a high-level delegation in the strongest public clash between the allies since the war began.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the U.S. of “retreating” from a “principled position” by allowing the vote to pass without conditioning the cease-fire on the release of hostages held by Hamas.

The U.S. had already voted three times against a ceasefire in Gaza that didn’t condemn Hamas or ensure the remaining Israeli hostages were freed. Some estimate that 100 hostages are still alive and need to be rescued.

But on Monday, the Biden Administration decided not to vote against the U.N.’s resolution for a ceasefire that didn’t include a condemnation of Hamas or the freeing of hostages. Unfortunately, this is a step in the wrong direction regarding the U.S.’s alliance with Israel.

So while Jean-Pierre might claim the Administration isn’t playing politics, we all know the truth. Instead of condemning Hamas and working to free the hostages, the Administration took the easy way out.

President Biden is clearly more concerned about his poll numbers right now among younger far Left voters who support Hamas. Much of this radicalism stems from pro-Hamas indoctrination on college campuses. This radicalism extends to college-aged voters and young people, perhaps closer to age 40.

And the worst part of the Administration’s U.S. abstention is that it sends the message that it believes Israel is unjustified in fighting in Gaza. It totally ignores the brutal attack that Hamas terrorists perpetrated on innocent Israeli civilians on October 7.

You don’t go into a sovereign country and murder 1,400 men, women, and children – and not expect a harsh response. Israel is fighting to protect the future of the Jewish state and to rescue the remaining hostages. The U.S. must not turn its back on its greatest ally.

The ACLJ remains a staunch ally of Israel. Yesterday at the U.N., we advocated for international support of Israel. We also continue to work to bring the remaining hostages home.

As you know, the ACLJ helps persecuted Christians all over the world. ACLJ Senior Counsel CeCe Heil delivered an oral intervention at the U.N., pleading for international support for Pakistani Christian Shahzad Masih.

In 2017, Shahzad was unjustly sentenced to death by hanging in Pakistan. We have been working to free him ever since.

In 2022, the ACLJ filed an official complaint with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD), which deals with issues of arbitrary detention.

The U.N. WGAD just publicly issued its decision that Shahzad’s rights had been violated. It called on the Pakistani government “to take the steps necessary to remedy the situation of Mr. Masih” and to “release Mr. Masih immediately and accord him an enforceable right to compensation and other reparations.”

The ACLJ is demanding that Pakistani authorities comply with this opinion and release Shahzad immediately. Join our efforts to free Shahzad by signing our petition.

We can’t advocate for Israel or persecuted Christians without your generous support. We are in the final days of our Life & Liberty Drive. All gifts are TRIPLED. But our deadline is looming – donate today.
