Not Blind Justice, but Justice With Blind Spots

Blind justice is one of America’s most important founding principles, but you wouldn’t know it judging by the past week's events.

First, congressional testimony by a former associate of Hunter Biden revealed that the President’s son had likely used his father – then-Vice President Joe Biden – to peddle influence and make international deals worth millions. This news broke only days after the Justice Department’s outrageous, sweetheart-deal plea agreement fell apart.  Only a handful of days later, DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith conveniently announced a second indictment of former President Trump, meaning a Democrat-appointed prosecutor will now be charging a former Republican President in front of a far-Left judge in a far-Left city.  Regardless of what Americans think about January 6 or Hunter Biden’s tawdry, indecent influence peddling, there are clearly two different systems of justice in America today.

What we are seeing is not blind justice; it’s justice with blind spots depending on one’s politics. That should be of great concern to all Americans.

This trend predates the Biden Administration.  Back when I was a Congressman, I remember Bill Clinton jetting around the world asking for foreign dollars for the “Clinton Foundation” – all while his wife was serving as Secretary of State.  Of course the Clintons used the power of the family member currently in office to increase their power and wealth, and of course the entrenched bureaucracy in our nation’s capital didn’t bat an eye.  Despite our best efforts in Congress to hold her accountable, no charges were ever filed.  There was simply a different set of rules for the Clintons.

Now consider how the Trump Administration was treated from Day One until we left office.  Powerful progressives weaponized the FISA warrant process to go after innocent Americans based on the Russia Hoax.  The DOJ wasted $32 million taxpayer dollars on the Mueller report, which found no evidence of collusion or obstruction of justice.  The real collusion was between the Clinton campaign and the FBI, a partnership that turned shoddy intelligence reports written by Christopher Steele into the pretext for the entire Russia hoax.  Even the Durham report, which proved that men like James Comey, Adam Schiff, John Brennan, and James Clapper lied to the American people about Russia collusion, yielded no consequences for most of the wrongdoers. In fact, many of these same individuals went on lying to the American people, alleging that Hunter Biden’s laptop – which apparently contained clear evidence of the Biden family’s corruption – was little more than “Russian disinformation.”

This double standard is not reserved for the powerful or wealthy, though.  Think about how the Biden Administration has meted out “justice” during its tenure:  Biden’s DOJ weaponized the FBI against America’s parents by labeling them “terrorists” if they publicly voiced concerns about the troubling subjects their children were being taught at school.  It recently recommended no jail time for an abortion activist who both defaced a church’s walls and assaulted a church employee in response to the Roe v. Wade decision last summer.  In fact, Biden’s DOJ has yet to prosecute the nearly 100 cases of church attacks by abortion activists since last year.  But don’t worry, it has found ample time to utilize its enormous resources elsewhere: when a Planned Parenthood center was attacked in July 2022, a multi-agency coalition was able to locate the suspect and arrest him within four days. Institutions like the DOJ should not ignore wrongdoing; they should simply apply the law equally to all Americans.

Unfortunately, Biden’s DOJ is more interested in punishing those who point out its double standard. FBI Special Agent Garret O’Boyle, who bravely testified before Congress about the agency’s efforts to target pro-life individuals, was met with threats from the agency he worked for when he dared to expose its wrongdoing.  I’m proud to stand alongside the ACLJ as they represent this courageous American servant. It is whistleblowers like him who are on the front lines of defending our constitutional republic from this kind of corruption.

The events of the past week are yet more evidence that the progressive Left sees our institutions not as safeguards that serve the American people, but as tools that must be utilized to advance the progressive agenda.  To fight back, conservatives must work to preserve the integrity of our institutions, prioritize fact and truth, and ensure that every American is treated equally before the law.  We should start by holding Hunter Biden accountable for his crimes and corruption.
