Last night, the sweeping voting rights bill known as the “For the People Act (H.R. 1 in the House and S. 1 in the Senate) was blocked in the Senate. The Left is starting to realize the radical shift that they aimed to accomplish with gaining a different makeup of Congress – may not be as easy as they thought.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed his frustration after the results of the vote:

Once again Senate Republicans have signed their names in the ledger of history alongside Donald Trump, the big lie, and voter suppression to their enduring disgrace. . . . But I want to be very clear about one thing: the fight to protect voting rights is not over, by no means. . . . Make no mistake about it, it will not be the last time voting rights comes up for a debate in the Senate. . . . We have several serious options for how to reconsider this issue and advance legislation to combat voter suppression. We are going to explore every last one of our options.

President Biden even released a statement after the vote to echo the frustration of Sen. Schumer and proponents of this bill:

Unfortunately, a Democratic stand to protect our democracy met a solid Republican wall of opposition. Senate Republicans opposed even a debate, even considering legislation to protect the right to vote and our democracy. It was the suppression of a bill to end voter suppression, another attack on voting rights that is sadly not unprecedented.

It’s clear that things did not go as planned for the Left. But what does this say about the long-term political agenda of the Left?

ACLJ Senior Counsel for Global Affairs and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo explains what this move signals to our country when Members of Congress advocate for a federal takeover of our elections:

It’s really unfortunate. This is the Left – the ruling class trying to create even more power to themselves. They don’t want simple things like people being required to show their I.D. to vote. They want to take your money and give it to candidates that you don’t like. . . . This is also a demonstration in terms of the unanimity that this isn’t some fringe group in the Democratic party – this is who they are full stop. They are people who want the power to be in Washington, D.C. and not with the people.

Since H.R. 1 failed miserably in the Senate, the Left is now focused on getting rid of the legislative filibuster. Mike Pompeo further explained why they are going after this issue now:

What is important is that we understand that they know that their agenda is unpopular. They know that they only have a number of months before they are likely to lose control of both houses of the U.S. Congress. They are going to move heaven and earth as quickly as they can. So, we need to continue to make a case for why our vision and principles are right and fight these inside battles within the U.S. Senate with every ounce of energy that we all have. . . . But I can tell you this – I have every expectation for every one of our leaders in the United States Senate to do the right thing and continue to make sure they remain united.

As we’ve told you, H.R. 1 was an assault on our democracy. Our legal and Government Affairs teams are working hard to make sure this bill is never signed into law. Thankfully, there was a check on the power grab attempt by the Left, and they understand the reality that their agenda will be challenged and checked every step of the way.
