This is the latest installment in a year-end series looking back at a few of the hundreds of victories by the ACLJ in 2011.

In September, Morgan – a second grade girl – was named “special student” of the week by her Pennsylvania elementary school. She was given the customary privilege of being allowed to read a story from her favorite book to her class. Morgan’s favorite book was the Bible, and she wanted to read a Bible story to her classmates. However, when her teacher realized the Morgan’s favorite book was the Bible, her teacher told her that she would not be allowed to read an account from that book because not every student believed the Bible.

The ACLJ immediately got involved, and informed school officials that preventing Morgan from reading from the Bible, when other children who were recognized as “special student” of the week were allowed to read from the book of their choice, violated her constitutional rights. The school quickly responded, allowing Morgan to read from her favorite book – the Bible – to her second grade class.

To help the ACLJ continue to have the resources we need to make these victories possible and continue these fights, please consider making a donation to the ACLJ through our year-end Matching Challenge. Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar though the end of the year.
